The Power of “Character Arcs”

A “character arc,” that is, the changes a character goes through during the 2 hours of a movie, is one of the most tricky aspects of screenwriting. You miss it, and you have in your hands a flat piece of narrative, a dull chain of events without a human-emotional core. Such movies do not move us to laughter or tears.
